Code Compliance

The World Anti-Doping Code (Code) is the document that harmonizes anti-doping regulations across all sports and all countries of the world by providing a framework for anti-doping policies, rules, and regulations for sport organizations and public authorities.

WADA International Standards

The purpose of the International Standards is harmonization among Anti-Doping Organizations responsible for specific technical and operational parts of the anti-doping programs.

Adherence to the International Standards is mandatory for compliance with the Code.

The International Standards may be revised from time to time by the WADA Executive Committee after reasonable consultation with the Signatories and governments.

Unless provided otherwise in the Code, International Standards and all revisions shall become effective on the date specified in the International Standard or revision.

How does a Signatory become Code-compliant?

Step 1: Code Acceptance

A Signatory to the Code must agree to the principles of the Code and agree to implement and comply with the Code.

Step 2: Code Implementation

The Signatory then needs to amend its rules and policies to include the mandatory articles and principles of the Code.

These anti-doping rules must be submitted to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for review in order for them to be pronounced in line with the Code.

National Olympic Committees (NOC) may use the Model Rules for National Olympic Committees to draft the NOC anti-doping rules if there is an established National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) in the country.

If there is no established NADO in the country, the responsibility of anti-doping activities reverts to the NOC, and the NOC may use the Model Rules for National Anti-Doping Organizations to draft a set of NADO anti-doping rules.

Step 3: Code Enforcement

Finally, the Signatory must enforce its amended rules and policies in accordance with the Code.

How does WADA monitor each organization’s implementation of and compliance with the Code?

WADA uses an online Code Compliance Assessment Survey, WADALogic, for Code Signatories to use in order to facilitate the fulfillment of their reporting obligations. This online tool assists WADA in evaluating the status of each signatory with regards to Code compliance and enables WADA to provide guidance, if needed, to achieve complete compliance.
